In the latest ‘MKBLP: In Conversation with….’ Series, Jan Flawn CBE, Chair of PJ Chair and MKBLP Board Director, speaks to Melanie Beck, Chief Executive of MyMiltonKeynes.

Putting to work the assets of MyMiltonKeynes to support the wider community throughout the pandemic, Melanie highlighted how the organisation’s distinguishable transportation was repurposed to make vital deliveries including food parcels for those shielding, critical PPE to the hospital and even body bags which was, according to Melanie; “incredibly humbling.”

Touching on the pull of the community throughout the lockdown, Melanie also discussed the wider partnerships amongst the council and Milton Keynes organisations to support the re-opening of the city’s economy, particularly within the leisure, restaurant, and retail industries. As these sectors make up to 75% of the BID, which MyMiltonKeynes is delivering, Melanie outlines plans, and adjustments, to not only meet the 2021 delivery, but provide vital support to these businesses as they enter a phase of recovery.

While the defined area of the BID is solely focused on CMK, through the rise of community activism Melanie addressed the potential for further BIDs to be formed in areas outside of the city centre which would drive a critical mass of money to enhance the entire city.

With safety a key theme of the BID, and a vital message as we emerge from the pandemic, Melanie also highlights the hands-on approach which has been applied to help the city’s vibrant retail and hospitality sector reopen. With a greater emphasis on signage and clear directions and advise to make consumers confident, Melanie stressed the message: “CMK is Covid-19 safe.”
